So lee and I were in the car listening to Hayden's Elk-Lake Serenade when she asked me who was singing back-up on track 11 - Roll Down That Wave. I made some glib comment about Howie Beck, however Lee knew it was Julie Doiron one her favourite Canadian singer-songwriters. I first got into Julie after seeing her play bass in Gord Downie's band while touring Coke Machine Glow (or was it Battle of the Nudes?), either way I was smitten. If you haven't heard Julie there are a few things you should know. She's amazing live. She sings in both official languages. She plays in a slew of incredible bands. She has had a terrific solo career since 1996, although she did release a couple of 7" in the early nineties. Also, she founded Sappy Records and holds the annual Sappy Fest in Sackville, New Brunswick. Her new album Woke Myself Up, released by jagjaguwar, is an intimate chronicle of a love, heartbreak, compassion, and family (forget what pitchfork says). The album was delicately produced by her former Eric's Trip bandmate Rick White. Furthermore it is quite crucial to note that she plays bass/sings and co-writes for Canada's version of a love child between Neil Young and Stephen Malkmus... Shotgun and Jaybird. Could someone explain to me why S&J will not be performing at Sappyfest?
ps: check out this great interview with Julie by Michael Barclay
