So yesterday the indie rumourmill confirmed what Becca had told us. I refused to believe it true. There was no way that Shotgun & Jaybird, Canada's greatest indie tandem, were calling it quits. I could not for the life of me make sense of what I had been told. Granted I get excited about a lot of things, but the first time I heard S&J's There are days and then there are days EP I felt like I had been punched in the gut with a reality check. There was an authenticity present in their music unlike that of other Cancon compatriots. There was just something incredibly special about the way they played, what they were saying, and how they were singing it. When I brought the EP back from the Island last summer I introduced the track long distance dates to all of my friends as the best unreleased Pavement song they'd never heard. Was I ever wrong, S&J were far better than any unreleased Pavement song, which is saying something since All My Friends was pretty unbelieveable. (aside: Mike just called, I had to break the news to him...he never got to see them, I think I ruined his day) Speaking of seeing them live, a bunch of us went out to the Underground in Hamilton to see them play back in December. We had a chance encounter with THT, who seemed to be equally excited to see them play again. There might not have been too many S&J fans among the frat heavy Constantines crowd, but when they opened up with Two and Two is Four, a how-to guide for the lo-fi, fists began to pump has they counted down the choruses. I could go on and on about the the countless hours of joy I have received walking all over this god forsaken town listening to songs like; writing on our arms, lovers of the world be on time tonight , head security guard surveys the ground around him, pidgeon, long distance dates, secret, marquee glass, Spill Yer Lungs, Province to Province, or the fact that Shotgun Jimmie's home recording 6,000 True Stories of Love probably establishes him as one Canada's greatest contemporary singer-songwriters.... but there's no need to go on and on. You'll be missed, so please don't go, and if you have to maybe you could come back every now and then.
"Leave this world behind made of water and dust. And arrive inside a carbon room. Seven scenic temples built with undercoat rust. But I'm stuck inside painting this room.Of all the things that should be guessed at, you will do your best with, everything you try. While I'm always waiting for the perfect time, I'll always miss the perfect rhyme to shout out to this crowd. So take me on a tour, a many-sided tour of your hometown. Show me where you did all your first things. Drive me by the farm, by the house, by where you grew up. Tell me how you have become yourself.I wanna see your name in lights,Right across the street from where I am playing. Shining through the marquee glass. Individual letters just like you and me."
